The State Board of Community Colleges on July 20 approved the selection of Dr. Gregory McLeod as president of Edgecombe Community College in Tarboro, and interim leaders for three other colleges.
A 17-year veteran of community colleges, McLeod is currently provost and chief campus academic officer at Thomas Nelson Community College in Virginia. He holds a doctorate in leadership and education from Barry University, a Master of Education degree in training and development from North Carolina State University and a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
McLeod will begin his new post in mid-August, succeeding Mark Lorence, who has served as interim president since June 1.
Meeting at Pitt Community College, the State Board also approved the following interim presidents:
- Dr. Kenneth Boham at James Sprunt Community College in Kenansville. Boham is the retired president of Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute and most recently served as interim president at Martin Community College. He will succeed Dr. Lawrence Rouse, who becomes president of Pitt Community College on Aug. 1.
- Dr. Gordon Burns at Vance-Granville Community College in Henderson, effective Aug. 11. Burns is the retired president of Wilkes Community College. He will succeed Dr. Stelfanie Williams, who becomes vice president for Durham affairs at Duke University in August.
- Dr. William Aiken at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh. Aiken is the retired president of Sampson Community College and most recently served as interim president at Cleveland Community College. He will succeed Dr. Stephen Scott, who retires at the end of August after nearly 15 years as Wake Tech’s president and more than four decades working in higher education.
In other action, the board:
- Approved an allocation of $11.3 million in federal funds to support adult education and literacy activities in North Carolina. The money will go to 63 organizations, including community colleges and nonprofit agencies that provide literacy services. The organizations were selected through a competitive grant process administered by the NC Community College System, and the amount each organization will receive from this allocation is based on the number of instructional hours provided and achievement of measurable skills gains. This approval follows the board’s authorization in June of more than $2 million in base funding for the 63 service providers.
- Approved a rule requiring community college boards of trustees to adopt policies that assure a college has sound fiscal and management practices. The rule will take effect Aug. 1.
- Approved the creation of a System Advisory Council to make recommendations to the State Board on issues of systemwide or inter-college importance. The council will consist of 14 members, including State Board members, community college trustees and presidents, and a student. The president of the NC Community College System will serve as a non-voting member, except in the case of a tie.
- Voted to begin the rulemaking process for a proposed addition to the State Board of Community Colleges Code. The proposed rule would establish a process that local boards of trustees must follow when hiring college presidents. The rule will be open for public comment July 24-Aug. 23.
- Approved an Associate in Applied Science degree in agricultural biotechnology at Alamance Community College in Graham, beginning in spring 2019.
- Approved an Associate in Applied Science degree to train physical therapist assistants at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, beginning in fall 2020.
- Approved a Practical Nursing Diploma program at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute in Hudson, beginning in spring 2019.
- Approved an Associate in Applied Science degree in diesel and heavy equipment technology at Carteret Community College in Morehead City, beginning this fall.
- Approved a Nurse Aide Certificate program at Martin Community Collegein Williamston, beginning this fall.
- Approved an Associate in Applied Science degree in manufacturing technology at Rockingham Community College in Wentworth, beginning this fall.
