On a humid August day, we found ourselves walking the diamond of the Catawba Valley Community College Red Hawks in Hickory. CVCC is one of a handful of community colleges in North Carolina that features an athletics program as part of student life, which is one reason why we were walking around a baseball field in 90 percent humidity in dress clothes.
The primary reason, however, is that during an earlier visit to CVCC we asked Dr. Garrett Hinshaw, the president of CVCC, to share his story of how he came to a career in the community college system, and the genesis of his story began with baseball.
